What's Happening

Boulder resident, Judith Frey has produced a 33-minute DVD that features historic music, visual arts and poetry from the Silk Road regions of western and central Asia. The DVD, entitled The Silk Road: Music, Arts, and Poetry from Istanbul to Samarqand, is narrated by Christopher Sarson of the BBC's Masterpiece Theater.

Judith became interested in Islamic arts and architecture while the Boulder-Dushanbe Teahouse was being built. She was a member of the Sister Cities delegation that traveled to Dushanbe, Samarkand and Bukhara in 1999. Photos of Iran and Afghanistan were taken in 1970, with photos of the newly-restored buildings in Central Asia taken in 1999. All of the images were edited with camera movement.

The DVD features recordings of rare Persian classical music and music made in the 1960s and 1970s, with one recording collected in Samarkand. The music, along with 140 photos of art and architecture, follow historic Silk Road routes through Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, and Central Asia.

Wes Blomster of the Daily Camera writes, "The DVD is a stunning journey through music, art, and poetry, from Istanbul to Samarqand."
